SmartMatrix explores what happens when the Functional Medicine Matrix — traditionally a static form or diagram — becomes structured, editable information that can evolve with a patient instead of being redrawn each time.

WHY IT EXISTS

A printed matrix captures one moment. But health context accumulates: symptoms change, plans evolve, results arrive over time. If each entry becomes structured information with metadata, the matrix can become a living record rather than a snapshot.

CURRENT PROTOTYPE

The working web prototype represents patient and consultation information plus matrix areas (symptoms, nutrition, digestion, psycho-emotional profile, treatment planning, laboratory findings, and more) as dynamic entries that can be created, edited, removed, and inspected. Matrix state serializes to JSON, and an Add operation was connected to a REST endpoint — a POST request with logged request/response — instead of remaining browser-only state.

RESEARCH DIRECTION

The longer-term questions: preserve previous states instead of overwriting them, compare entries over time, connect supporting documents, visualize evolving patterns, and retrieve the context behind a current observation. Longitudinal comparison, semantic retrieval, and AI-assisted summaries are research directions, not implemented features.

SCOPE

SmartMatrix is a software prototype and research experiment. It is not a diagnostic tool, a medical device, or a substitute for clinical judgment.
